Even though Star Trek is one of the most popular truyền thông franchises of all-time, the beloved science fiction series was facing a tough situation at the beginning of the 21st Century. The television series Enterprise hadn’t generated the fanbase that The Next Generation or Deep Space Nine had, and the films had begun to decline in quality, leading to the box office disappointment of Star Trek: Nemesis. The future of Star Trek looked bleak, but director J.J. Abrams managed lớn introduce a new generation khổng lồ the characters with his 2009 reboot. The film found a clever way lớn launch the “Kelvin Timeline” as a parallel universe lớn the original series; while it didn’t negate anything that had happened previously, it allowed the rebooted characters khổng lồ have their own adventures without having khổng lồ conform to lớn previously established events.
The success of 2009’s Star Trek prompted the development of the sequel Star Trek Into Darkness with Abrams returning khổng lồ direct. After being reprimanded for exposing Starfleet giải pháp công nghệ to a primitive race of aliens, Captain James Kirk (Chris Pine) is assigned khổng lồ track down the rogue terrorist John Harrison (Benedict Cumbarbatch). Kirk, Spock (Zachary Quinto), & the crew of the USS Enterprise head into Klingon space to find Harrison. Although Star Trek Into Darkness was initially well received & became the highest-grossing film in the franchise, it’s been hit with a backlash from Star Trek fans. However, a decade later, Into Darkness holds up much stronger than some of its critics admit.
The greatest strength that the “Kelvin Timeline” Star Trek films had was their cast; while Pine, Quinto, & the other cast members paid tribute to the legacy performers whose characters they were adopting, they offered more than just shallow impressions. It’s clear that this is a younger version of Kirk who is still learning how to become a great Captain. In Into Darkness, Kirk understands the responsibility that comes with sitting in the chair by showing that he is willing to lớn sacrifice himself. When Starfleet Fleet Admiral Alexander Marcus (Peter Weller) threatens to lớn destroy the USS Enterprise in order to lớn mask evidence of his conspiracy, Kirk attempts to lớn barter for his crew’s life by offering his own. Their decision to stick with him no matter what is one of the most inspirational moments in the film.

Additionally, Quinto shows an evolution of Spock as he wrestles with his identity. There’s a more humorous chất lượng to Spock in Into Darkness, as he and Lieutenant Uhura (played by Zoe Saldana) begin to lớn have relationship issues; Kirk even gets trapped in the middle of one of their arguments in a hilarious moment. However, this ultimately takes a more serious direction when Spock reveals why he has been concealing his emotions from the woman he loves. He is still traumatized by the loss of his home planet, và is doing his best to lớn maintain the Vulcan customs that still exist. Spock eventually lets his emotions loose when he storms after Khan during the final action sequence in order to lớn save Kirk from death.
The final conversation between Kirk & Spock is a perfect summation of why fans love these characters. Their interaction is both friendly and respectful, và Kirk seems to lớn be aware of how heartbroken Spock was when he feared the worst for his captain. As a subtle indication that Spock has finally found a way for them lớn be friends, và not just fellow officers, he bids goodbye to lớn Kirk by simply referring lớn him as “Jim.”
A bulk of the criticisms that Into Darkness received were due to the comparisons it drew with the 1982 film Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, which is often referred to as the greatest film in the entire franchise. Wrath of Khan director Nicholas Meyer criticized Into Darkness, and said “just by putting the same words in different characters' mouths didn't địa chỉ up to lớn anything.” Similarly, Collider film critic Matt Goldberg ranked Into Darkness as the worst film in the series, & said “rather than boldly build a new world, Into Darkness steals from the old one, & does so poorly.”

While there are certainly scenes from The Wrath of Khan that are reframed in Into Darkness, it’s far more than the shallow remake that some have made it out to lớn be. While the reveal that Harrison is actually Khan is fairly obvious lớn predict, Cumberbatch takes the character in a completely different direction. He has the same love & dedication for his crew that Kirk does, và is just as willing khổng lồ sacrifice himself.
Khan’s criticisms of Starfleet aren’t entirely unfounded. Marcus is revealed lớn be a warmongering radical who wants an excuse to lớn start a war with the Klingons. With allusions khổng lồ the administration of President George W. Bush & the nationalistic rhetoric that emerged post-9/11, Into Darkness is certainly politically minded. The conspiracy involving Marcus adds an interesting new angle lớn Khan, as he’s more sympathetic, yet no less brutal.

Despite the overall quality of the franchise, great action sequences aren’t really what it's known for. Even the stronger films in the saga feature some underwhelming action, such as the brawl between Kirk và Kruge in Star Trek III: The search for Spock. However, Into Darkness features some of the most inventive và exciting moments of suspense in the entire saga.
The opening sequence feels like it was taken straight from an Indiana Jones movie, as Kirk and Bones (Karl Urban) are escaping an ancient civilization và jumping off the edge of a cliff. It’s an exhilarating way to lớn kick off the adventure that does a great job at reestablishing the characters’ dynamic. Similarly, the last battle between Khan và Spock is riveting due lớn the emotional weight that it carries. Despite Khan’s physical prowess, Quinto shows that Spock is not willing khổng lồ let Kirk die.
